Cooperative Project on

 T.S. Eliot ( 1888-1965) D. H. Lawrence ( 1885 - 1930) and Roald Dahl ( 1916 - 1990)

Is historical background relevant for Literature?

Literature can never be separated from the culture.

It reflects the time period in which it was created

WORLD WAR I = CATACLYSM (1914 - 1918)

British & Irish Modernism
The horrors of World War I (1914-19), with its accompanying atrocities and senselessness became the catalyst for the Modernist movement in literature and art. Modernist authors felt betrayed by the war, believing the institutions in which they were taught to believe had led the civilized world into a bloody conflict. They no longer considered these institutions as reliable means to access the meaning of life, and therefore turned within themselves to discover the answers.

Their antipathy towards traditional institutions found its way into their writing, not just in content, but in form

What is Modernism? The following are characteristics of Modernism:

·         Marked by a strong and intentional break with tradition. This break includes a strong reaction against established religious, political, and social views.
·         Belief that the world is created in the act of perceiving it; that is, the world is what we say it is.
·         There is no such thing as absolute truth. All things are relative.
·         No connection with history or institutions. Their experience is that of alienation, loss, and despair.
·         Championship of the individual and celebration of inner strength.
·         Life is unordered.
·         Concerned with the sub-conscious.

3 ESO Chinese New Year

Read the text below and answer the questions:

An introduction to Chinese New Year Chinese New Year does not follow the Western calendar. It starts with the new moon between the 21st January and 20th February, so the date is different each year. In 2017 it will be on the 28th January. The celebrations continue for 15 days, but in modern China seven days of holiday from work is normal. Each year is connected to a Chinese zodiac sign. There are twelve of them and here they are in sequence: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. 2017 is the year of the rooster. On the first day of Chinese New Year, the gods of heaven and earth are welcomed and evil spirits are scared away with fireworks, burning bamboo sticks, and lots of noise. The dragon dance is also used to scare away these bad spirits. On this first day, some people do not eat meat hoping this will extend their lives. Finally, the other important part of the first day of Chinese New Year is to honour older family members and friends. On New Year’s Eve (the night before the first day of the new year), there is a big meal with family members with a variety of special meat and fish dishes. Numbers are important, too; for good luck, eight individual dishes are served or seven if a family member died that year. Eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture.

BACHILLERATO "Animal Farm" Chapter I deadline 23 January 2017

About the story
Animal Farm tells the story of Farmer Jones’ animals who rise up in rebellion and take over the farm. Tired of being exploited for human gain, the animals—who have human characteristics such as the power of speech—agree to create a new and fairer society. The novel reads like a fairy tale, and Orwell originally subtitled it as one, but it is also a satire containing a message about world politics and especially the former Soviet Union.
In a satire, the writer attacks a serious issue by presenting it in a ridiculous, funny way. Orwell uses satire to expose what he saw as the myth of Soviet Socialism. The novel tells a story that people of all ages can understand, but it also tells us a second story— that of the real-life Revolution.
Since the Bolshevik Revolution of the early 1900s, the former Soviet Union had captured
the attention of the world with its socialist experiment. This form of government had some
supporters in Britain and the United States, but Orwell was against this system.
About the author
Orwell began life as Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell was a name he adopted later). He spent his early years in India as a lonely boy who liked to make up stories and talk with imaginary companions. He began to “write” before he even knew how. At the age of eight, Orwell’s parents sent him to a boarding school in England. He began to write poems and short stories as a way to deal with his boredom and loneliness.
Later, instead of going on to university, he decided to take a job in Burma with the Indian Imperial Police. Orwell wrote about this experience in Burmese Days (1934) and in the essay “Shooting an Elephant.” Returning to England to recover from a chronic lung illness, Orwell began his serious writing career. Over the next two decades, he wrote newspaper columns, novels, essays, and radio broadcasts, most of which grew out of his own personal experience.

Biography
Civil Rights for Kids Martin Luther King at the March on Washington by Unknown Occupation: Civil Rights Leader Born: January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, GA Died: April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN Best known for: Advancing the Civil Rights Movement and his "I Have a Dream" speech Biography: Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. He led non-violent protests to fight for the rights of all people including African Americans. He hoped that America and the world could become a colorblind society where race would not impact a person's civil rights. He is considered one of the great orators of modern times, and his speeches still inspire many to this day. Where did Martin grow up? Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929. He went to Booker T. Washington High School. He was so smart that he skipped two grades in high school. He started his college education at Morehouse College at the young age of fifteen. After getting his degree in sociology from Morehouse, Martin got a divinity degree from Crozer Seminary and then got his doctor's degree in theology from Boston University. Martin's dad was a preacher which inspired Martin to pursue the ministry. He had a younger brother and an older sister. In 1953 he married Coretta Scott. Later, they would have four children including Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and Bernice. How did he get involved in civil rights? In his first major civil rights action, Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This started when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She was arrested and spent the night in jail. As a result, Martin helped to organize a boycott of the public transportation system in Montgomery. The boycott lasted for over a year. It was very tense at times. Martin was arrested and his house was bombed. In the end, however, Martin prevailed and segregation on the Montgomery buses came to an end. When did King give his famous "I Have a Dream" speech? In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to organize the famous "March on Washington". Over 250,000 people attended this march in an effort to show the importance of civil rights legislation. Some of the issues the march hoped to accomplish included an end to segregation in public schools, protection from police abuse, and to get laws passed that would prevent discrimination in employment. It was at this march where Martin gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech has become one of the most famous speeches in history. The March on Washington was a great success. The Civil Rights Act was passed a year later in 1964. How did he die? Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4. 1968 in Memphis, TN. While standing on the balcony of his hotel, he was shot by James Earl Ray. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. Photo by Ducksters Interesting Facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. King was the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a national holiday. At the Atlanta premier of the movie Gone with the Wind, Martin sang with his church choir. There are over 730 streets in the United States named after Martin Luther King, Jr. One of his main influences was Mohandas Gandhi who taught people to protest in a non-violent manner. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The name on his original birth certificate is Michael King. This was a mistake, however. He was supposed to be named after his father who was named for Martin Luther, the leader of the Christian reformation movement. He is often referred to by his initials MLK.
