WRITING TASK HOMEWORK

Young Planet, an international youth magazine, runs a regular feature on topical issues. This month the magazine has asked readers to send in essays on the following topic:

When choosing a career, a person should
  seek self-fulfilment rather than money.
It is more important to ‘live one’s dream’
than to earn a good salary.

You have decided to send in an essay arguing either for or against this topic. You should:

·         outline the main factors that influence a person’s choice of career
·         consider whether some jobs are more worthwhile than others

1 F What's your favourite book?

World Book Day

Every year on April 23rd millions of people around the world celebrate books and reading on ‘World Book Day’. The date is important because two great writers died on this day in 1616; William Shakespeare, the English playwright and poet and Miguel de Cervantes, the Spanish writer. Each year UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) chooses one city to be the World Book Capital City. Conakry, the capital of the Republic of Guinea, has been named World Book Capital for 2017. So, what happens on this special day? Schools, book shops and libraries hold all kinds of fun events. People wear costumes of their favourite book characters, authors sign copies of their books, story-tellers read to children and adults … and much more.

World Book Day April 23rd

World Book Day is a yearly event on April 23rd, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to promote reading, publishing and copyright. In the United Kingdom, the day is recognized on the first Thursday in March. World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on 23 April 1995.

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia,  The original idea was of the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes, who died on this date. In 1995 UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as that of the birth or death of several other prominent authors. (In a historical coincidence, Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same date 23 April 1616 )
