Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is an annual campaign to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. It is observed in April in the USA.

Each year during the month of April, state, territory, tribal and community-based organizations, rape crisis centers, government agencies, businesses, campuses and individuals plan events and activities to highlight sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.

The theme, slogan, resources and materials for the national SAAM campaign are coordinated by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center each year with assistance from anti-sexual assault organizations throughout the United States.

Here is a powerful excerpt from President Obama’s proclamation for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month 2011:

“Despite reforms to our legal system, sexual violence remains pervasive and largely misunderstood.  Nearly one in six American women will experience an attempted or completed rape at some point in her life, and for some groups, rates of sexual violence are even higher.  Almost one in three American Indian and Alaska Native women will be sexually assaulted.  Young women ages 16 to 24 are at greatest risk, and an alarming number of young women are sexually assaulted while in college.  Too many men and boys are also affected.  With each new victim and each person still suffering from an attack, we are called with renewed purpose to respond to and rid our Nation of all forms of sexual violence…

Each victim of sexual assault represents a sister or a daughter, a nephew or a friend.  We must break the silence so no victim anguishes without resources or aid in their time of greatest need.”

So what can we do about it?

Saint Patrick's Day

Let's explore the theme of Sain Patrick's Day.

St. Patrick’s Day 2018 occurs on Saturday, March 17, in observance of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. What began as a religious feast day in the 17th century has evolved into a variety of festivals across the globe celebrating Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a whole lot of green.

Let's check your previous knowledge! http://a4esl.org/q/h/vm/stpatrick.html

The following song is a folk tune on his album "Divide" which recounts how his grandfather fell in love with his grandmother. Fill in the gaps in the worksheet and check your answers while you listen to it.

Happy Father's Day

Dear students,

Like many European countries, Spain’s holiday calendar is heavily influenced by the church. Father’s Day (El Día del Padre in Spanish) is celebrated in Spain on St. Joseph’s Day which falls on March 19. St. Joseph’s Day is a Roman Catholic feast day designated to commemorate the life of Joseph, husband of Mary, who set the example of what a good husband and father is for his role within the Holy Family. Saint Joseph is also the patron saint of the Catholic Church, immigrants, workers, carpenters, as well as other groups and causes.

Until recently, Father's Day was a national holiday in Spain. This holiday is still considered to be extremely important in Spain as it acknowledges the contribution of fathers within the family and society as a whole. It is also the time to honor those family members and friends who fulfill the role of father-figures. In Spain, it is not uncommon for the whole family to get together for a big meal and to give small gifts to their father. In Valencia, St. Joseph’s Day coincides with their huge annual fiesta of Las Fallas.

However, Father's day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in more than 100 countries such as USA, Argentina, Chile, Cuba or United Kingdom.

Let's discuss the following videos by Jimmy Kimmel on the occasion of Father's Day

As much as most of us love our dads, we keep secrets from them too. Everyone knows that honesty is the best policy so this reporter went out on the street and asked kids to tell him the worst thing they ever did while their Dad was standing next to them. #FathersDay

So what's the worst thing you ever did ? write a comment below

Another American tradition is Jimmy Kimmel you tube challenge for father's day, last year the title was "I Love you Dad"

Hey Daddy catch!

This year is tell your dad you love him... sweet right?

After having so much fun let's watch this touching video
